Air Southwest service from Cork to Newquay takes off!
Friday, May 4th, 2007. Cork Airport management extended a warm welcome today to a new airline and a new route at a launch event held at Cork Airport. From today, low fares airline, Air Southwest begins its Cork to Newquay, Cornwall service.
“The introduction of a direct route between Cork and Newquay is excellent news from Air Southwest and underlines our commitment to expand our route network across the UK and beyond,” said Kevin Cullinane, Cork Airport Marketing Manager.
“Cork is one of Ireland’s most vibrant cities, an important business centre
and an ideal city break destination. We are confident it will prove
popular with passengers from the South West of England and will provide a real
boost to the region’s tourism industry. We look forward to working with
Air Southwest to ensure the success of this new route and look forward to
further expansion of services in the months ahead,” concluded Mr.
Cullinane.
Mike Coombes, Deputy Chief Executive at Air Southwest
said: “The new route will give people of the Cork Kerry region the opportunity
to come and explore the best that Cornwall and neighbouring Devon have to offer
and we are confident that our flights will generate thousands of new visitors to
the South of Ireland”.
Among the first passengers using the new service from Cork to Newquay was Stephen Harvey from Mallow. Stephen said: “We are thrilled about the new route from Cork to Newquay. Cornwall is a beautiful part of the world and we will definitely be using the service a few times a year”.
Also travelling on the first flight to Newquay was Richard Whitehouse from Cork. Richard welcomed the new route as it has enabled him to make a family wedding in Cornwall. Richard said: “I’m over the moon about the introduction of the new flights into Newquay. Previously the nearest flight link was into Bristol, so being able to fly straight to Cornwall and in under an hour is really valuable”.
Cornwall in South West England is renowned for its natural beauty. Framed by almost 500 kilometres of rugged coastline it boasts some of the best surfing and bathing beaches in the country and is also home to some of the most beautiful gardens in Britain.
Newquay, widely regarded as the surf capital of the UK, is the gateway to a range of renowned attractions including the world-famous Eden project, the Tate St. Ives Gallery and the wilds of Bodmin Moor.
Newquay Airport is just four miles from the stunning Watergate Bay, home to the Jamie Oliver inspired ‘Fifteen Cornwall’ restaurant and just a few miles from Rick Stein’s famous Seafood Restaurant in Padstow.
The new route commencing today will see the service operating three days a week – on Monday, Friday and Sunday throughout May, increasing to four flights a week with a Wednesday service from June. Flights will depart Cork at 12.55pm arriving in Newquay at 1.45pm, giving a flight time of less than an hour. On the return leg, flights will depart Newquay at 11.20am, arriving in Cork at 12.10pm.
