Friday, June 1st, 2007. Cork Airport management
and staff are looking forward to an extremely busy June Bank Holiday weekend
with 44,000 passengers expected to use the Airport between Friday, June 1st and
Monday, June 4th.
“We fully expect this to be one of the busiest
weekends of the year, as the June Bank Holiday weekend traditionally heralds the
beginning of the busy summer season for the travelling public”, said Kevin
Cullinane, Marketing Manager, Cork Airport.
In addition to regular
Bank Holiday weekend traffic, this weekend sees the beginning of the annual
Lourdes Diocesan Pilgrimages, with an estimated 1,164 passengers due to travel
to from Cork to Lourdes with the Cloyne pilgrimage group on charter flights this
weekend.
In other news, the first of the new fleet of Aer Arann
aircraft touched down at Cork Airport yesterday morning. Aer Arann recently
announced its intention to take delivery of 10 new ATR aircraft, investing $180
million in the new fleet.
A small group of lucky passengers left
Cork Airport yesterday morning on the new aircraft for a short trip over Cork
Harbour in order to experience the new aircraft first hand. The exterior of the
new ATR 72-500 aircraft features a specially designed colour scheme, making the
aircraft instantly recognisable.
Internally, the new
aircraft is brighter and more comfortable, featuring leather seats, noticeably
more leg room and additional storage space in the overhead bins. The ATR
72-500 is a new craft of similar size to the existing Aer Arann aircraft with a
capacity for 72 passengers.
In conclusion, Airport management
would like to take this opportunity to remind passengers of the following
check-in, luggage and EU hand luggage restrictions when travelling this
Summer:
Check-in
Summertime is a very busy time at Cork Airport
so in anticipation of the higher volumes of passengers going through the
Airport, Airport Management advises you to plan your trip in advance.
Check the times of your departure and please note that most flights open for
check-in 2 hours before the flight and many
close 40 minutes before departure to allow passengers time to clear security. Scheduled airlines
advise passengers to check-in 90 minutes before departure time and it
is recommended that passengers check-in at least 2 hours 30 minutes
before chartered flights. Aer Lingus offers self-service kiosks at the airport
and passengers may check-in online with Aer Lingus, Aer Arann and Ryanair if they
availed of this option when booking.
Baggage
Strict limits apply for checked-in and cabin baggage. Many
scheduled airlines now charge for each piece of checked-in luggage. These fees
are cheaper if you pay when you book online and help to avoid queues at the
Airline Ticket Desks at the airport. Passengers are also advised to carry just
ONE piece of hand luggage. Please remember to remove all sharp items from your
hand luggage. Cork Airport Security staff will not allow you to carry any
sharp items in your hand luggage. Items most frequently found include: scissors,
tweezers, tools, knitting needles, knives, darts, household cutlery, razor
blades, etc. In order to facilitate the efficient operation of Cork Airport's
passenger security process, passengers are asked to remove outer jackets and
belts, before they approach the screening machines. Lap top computers must be
removed from their cases and opened to reveal the keyboard.
New EU
Restrictions
New European Union rules limit the amount of liquids, gel and
aerosols that are allowed in hand luggage to 100ml containers. These items
must be carried in a resealable transparent plastic bag (1 litre maximum
capacity) with only one (1) bag per passenger which must be presented separately
at the security area. This rule applies to ALL flights and destinations, both
domestic and international. Exceptions to the rule are Medicines and Baby food
needed during the flight.
As a general rule of thumb, passengers
are advised to pack toiletries containing liquids, lotions and gels in their
checked-in baggage.
