Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. With the rain soaked month of July consigned
to the history books, management at Cork Airport are looking forward to an
extremely busy August Bank Holiday Weekend. Approximately 70,000
passengers are expected to use Cork Airport between today, Thursday, August 2nd
and Tuesday, August 7th.
Airport management said that the inclement
weather at home this summer has meant that people have been anxiously booking
flights and holidays to sunnier climes in destinations such as Spain, Portugal,
France, Greece and other summer hot spots.
“Behind every cloud
there is a silver lining and sales of seats to the sun spots served from Cork
Airport have been selling faster than in January, it’s been that busy over
July”, commented Kevin Cullinane, Cork Airport Marketing Manager. “With the
added increase in European and UK scheduled flights from the main airlines, our
customers have been busy escaping the vagaries of the Irish summer to seek sun
abroad”, he added.
This trend is illustrated by sun charter
passenger figures just released by Cork Airport. The figures confirm the
continuing popularity of summer sun destinations, with a total of 166,000
passengers figures opting for sun charter flights and holidays during the months
of May, June and July. Passenger figures for May showed an increase on the
same month last year while figures for June and July registered an increase of
12% and 7% respectively.
Cork Airport management, staff and
airport users are also celebrating the first year of operations at the new
terminal, as the 3 millionth passenger to use the new terminal passes through
the Airport this weekend. The new state-of-the-art terminal opened its
doors on August 1st, 2006 and has been extremely successful during its first
year of operation.
Passenger figures continue to increase
steadily, with over 1.8 million passengers travelling into and out of Cork
Airport so far this year, an increase of 5% on the first seven months of 2006.
Cork Airport currently offers passengers a total of 36 scheduled destinations
with nine airlines and a further 20 charter destinations to European sun spots.
