Friday, November 23rd, 2007. Cork Airport’s Police & Fire Service (CAPFS) recruit class of 2007 will today attempt to complete a full marathon distance relay (26.2 miles) on a treadmill at the Airport’s fire station.
Kevin Dunne, Airport Fire Officer said: "Every year the new Airport Police
& Fire Service recruits spend weeks preparing for our big charity fund
raiser. The guys have put a huge effort into preparing for this marathon
fundraiser. We look forward to raising as much money as we can for Marymount
Hospice and hope that anyone who supports us will dig deep into their
pockets."
Cork Airport’s Marketing Manager, Kevin Cullinane added:
"So far this year, the generosity of our staff and passengers has allowed us to
raise several thousand Euro towards local charities and appeals. We hope that
following this week's activity by our Airport Police & Fire Service
recruits, we'll raise that amount significantly higher."
The recruits will be wearing full firefighting gear and breathing apparatus while undertaking each leg of the relay. The approximate weight of the firefighting equipment is 50 pounds. It is envisaged that the marathon attempt will take about six hours to complete.
The Airport Police & Fire Service recruits will invite a representative of Marymount Hopice to attend their passing out ceremony later in Decemeber, where a cheque for the proceeds of today’s marathon event will be presented to the Cork-based hospice.
The management of Cork Airport has made a donation to today’s event on behalf of its staff and HMS Host, the catering provider at Cork Airport, has kindly agreed to provide refreshments for the recruits taking part in today’s event.
Cork Airport is on target to achieve 3.2 million passengers by year
end. There are currently over 40 destinations served by direct scheduled
flights and over 20 destinations served by direct chartered flights from Cork
Airport. Further information is available at www.corkairport.com
