Berlin is the capital city of Germany and the second most populous city in the European Union. Covering an area of 890 square kilometres, it is nine times larger than Paris. Munich is Germany’s third largest city after Berlin and Hamburg. The city is a recognised cultural centre as well as the birthplace of many prominent composers including Mozart, Wagner and Mahler. Munich is famous for its beer, particularly the annual Oktoberfest which takes place each year in September. For two weeks each year, the Oktoberfest attracts millions of visitors to its beer tents and fairground attractions. This year’s festival runs from September 20th to October 5th.

Nightlife in Munich is also thriving with over 6,000 licenced establishments in the city. The Viktualienmarkt is Munich’s most popular market for fresh food and delicatessen goods. 2008 marks Munich’s 850th anniversary and the city plans to celebrate with a number of festivals, concerts and exhibitions.
