Girona, in Spain’s Catalonia region, is the gateway to the Costa Brava and a wonderful destination in its own right. The city was once a wealthy medieval trading centre and its walled old quarter Barri Vell is still very much in use. The city also boasts many examples of the regional Modernisme architecture. The city’s nightlife is focused around Plaça de la Independència and Plaça de Sant Feliu and Girona is known for the quality and variety of its restaurants.
