Things to do here

With the Mediterranean lapping at its shores Nice enjoys a prime position in the Cote d’Azure and despite being France’s fifth-largest city, it’s small enough to feel at home in in just a few days. See the work of Henri Matisse, honoured at the Musee Matisse on the hilltop where the artist once lived. People-watch along the Promenade des Anglais at the heart of the action. Dine on local Nicois dishes washed down with some excellent ‘vin de Bellet’; Nice’s house wine, produced on the hills directly behind the city.

To Eat

  1. Peixes - A friendly bistro with a Medditeranean vibe and some of the best seafood in Nice. Try the ceviche, octopus carpaccio or lobster ravioli. The banana crème brulle is legendary.
  2. Café Marche - A coffee shop serving high-quality organic produce sourced from the local market. Try the squash and zucchini gratin with red rice and parmesan and a chocolate fondant to finish. Sunday brunch is legendary with scrambled eggs, club sandwiches, fromage frais and brioche on the menu.

To Stay

  1. Villa Bougainville - A grand 1900s villa close to the train station, this is a great-value boutique hotel.
  2. Hotel Negresco - A glamorous palatial hotel in a National Historic Building overlooking the bay. Rooms come in a range of styles with period furniture and rich fabrics, with all the amenities of a five-star hotel.
