FlyHackFly Hackathon At Cork Airport

Sep 15, 2015

Registration open for Ireland’s first airport hackathon at Cork Airport

IT@Cork and Cork Airport are pleased to announce an upcoming Hackathon event titled “FlyHackFly”. The event, a first for an Irish airport, will take place at Cork Airport over two days, 2nd and 3rd October 2015 as part of the Startup Gathering.

FlyHackFly will be Cork's marquee event for The Startup Gathering and will effectively be the first of a week-long schedule of 300 other events.

Developers, designers, marketers and entrepreneurs from Ireland, the UK and beyond have been invited to take part in FlyHackFly at Cork Airport in what will be only the world’s third ever airport hackathon. It follows hugely successful similar events at San Francisco in 2012 and a Paris/ Amsterdam co-hosted event in June 2015. Registration for the event, which is free, is now open at www.flyhackfly.eventbrite.com. Anyone interested can register as an individual or as a team.

Ireland's best and brightest entrepreneurial minds will be taking part to impress the judging panel as they compete for the grand prize. Over the two days, the airport and its passengers will act as a live test bed, allowing the hackathon participants research customer needs, validate their proposition and battle test their solution.

Fergus Murphy, CEO of Plus10 and FlyHackFly Convenor said: “We want to put Cork very firmly on the Global Hackathon Map and create a showcase for the city’s great talent. We think we have done that. Now it’s up to those bright young minds to get online, register and show us what they can do.

“There has already been a lot of interest in the flyhackfly hackathon and we’re hoping to make it an annual event in the Irish tech calendar.”

The Flyhackfly hackathon will endeavour to find solutions to every-day travel problems in the areas of queueing, transportation, smart airport, premium and social.

Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director at Cork Airport said: “We are delighted to be hosting Cork’s first airport hackathon, which is promising to be a fantastic event. Cork Airport has always been ahead of its peers with our innovative use of technology.

“We were the first airport in the world to launch Flightradar24, a flight tracking feature on our App as well as using the latest in technology to enhance the award-winning passenger experience at Cork Airport.”

Ronan Murphy, Chairman IT@Cork who are the events promoters said: “Taking on a challenge only previously attempted in San Francisco, and Paris/ Amsterdam typifies the dynamic mentality now pervasive throughout our Start-up Community in Cork.”

More information on the event can be found at www.flyhackfly.com. The Flyhackfly hackathon at Cork Airport is part of The Startup Gathering. It is an IT@Cork event, hosted by Cork Airport sponsored by CityJet and organised by Plus10 Coworking and Startup Space, Cork.

The judges for the event are Finbarr Ring, EMEA Sales Director at Airport IT Systems; Bill Liao, Co-founder of CoderDojo.com, Indie.Bio and WeForest.org and Kevin Cullinane, Head of Communications at Cork Airport.
